THE JURISDICTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT
(in the context of the Republic of Azerbaijan)
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a permanent international tribunal established to prosecute individuals accused of committing the most serious crimes that concern the international community as a whole. The ICC is headquartered in The Hague, Kingdom of the Netherlands.
In this respect, it is important to distinguish the ICC from other judicial bodies. Although the ICC, founded in 2002, operates as an independent institution separate from the United Nations and tries individuals for the gravest crimes, the International Court of Justice (established in 1945) is a UN judicial organ that settles legal disputes between states. By contrast, the European Court of Human Rights (established in 1959) is a regional court independent of the UN that deals with human rights violations committed by states.
